Mention luxury MPVs, European makes aren’t usually the first to pop into our minds. It is after all a segment that has been long dominated by the Japanese in Malaysia. Even if we opt to a European in the segment, it’s usually the Peugeots and Volkswagens.
But here, we have a rather unique species that roams our streets- a Mercedes-Benz R280L. While the R-Class may not be a new sight around here, the R280L isn’t common. The R280L is an active Grand Tourer, made to cater active individuals who are keen on sports and recreational activities. The heart is powered by a 3.0L V6 engine that can churn out 231 horses with maximum torque of 300 Nm at between 2 500 to 5 000 rpm. Spec sheets claim that this beast can reach up to 220 km/h of top speed and achieve 0-100 km/h sprint in only 9.6 seconds. It is also claimed to be fuel efficient and reviews do state a combined fuel efficiency of 11 litres per 100 km.
The R280 is also bigger; the interior now expands to a 7 seater from what was 6 seater in the R350L. The sophisticated interior concept and a well-planned dimension design provide a comfortable roominess for the R280L. Besides the fact that you are invited inside with a walnut wood and cream leather interior, you are also invited extensive equipment, features and assistance systems that are claimed to represent the pinnacle in handling comfort and safety. Updates on the exterior of the R280 includes AMG styling package bumper at the rear circular foglamps paired along with 18-inch 5-twinspoke light-alloy wheels.
The unit here with us is a 2008 unit, with a mileage of 142 438km. While you wonder if you’d have to sell an arm and a leg to own this 7-seater Merc, we would say, no need for drastic measures. Price affordably at only RM 99 000, this Merc is in great condition and is maintained well.
